Conflict

Aelandris is a collaborative storytelling game, based on themes of cooperation
and striving together against great odds. Although conflict is a natural part of
storytelling, there is a distinction between friendly and deadly conflicts
between player characters, and we strongly prefer the former to the latter.

As such, conflict between player characters that may result in severe crimes or
their death requires a very strong in-character (IC) reason and explicit consent
from all parties present, regardless of whether they are directly involved in
the scene or not. OOC consent should be sought before any such RP occurs,
keeping in mind the system of justice ICly present in Altheria. You are also
expected to abide by the code of Fair Play when engaging in such conflicts.

Fair Play guidelines:

* Do not conflate IC conflict with OOC conflict. At the end of the day, we are
all friends here, and though your character can hate another character, you as
a player should not hate the other player. Respect their roleplaying, and even
consider giving your character's enemy KUDOS after a good scene.

* Prefer to resolve character differences via a friendly conflict like a
sparring match before resorting to character-vs-character (CVC) combat.

* Killing another player's character is only permitted with a strong IC reason
and with opt-in consent using the CVC flag. Do not engage in CVC unless all
players present have OOCly consented, even if they are not directly involved
  in the conflict.

* Even with consent, killing the character of a new player is very strongly
  discouraged.

* Even with a strong reason, only kill another player's character if they have a
fighting chance. When in doubt, disengage from the conflict or cease combat
when the outcome is clear. Though this might go against your character's
motivations, it's very important to ensure a sense of fairness.

* Do not engage in IC conflict that involves your character committing a serious
crime or deliberately endangering innocent lives or the city without first
carefully going over HELP JUSTICE and HELP ROLEPLAYING. If the RP would
logically lead to the Guard being called, accept the IC consequences before
beginning. Always ask for clear consent OOCly well before starting any such
RP, as there may be players hidden, able to see/hear from another area, or
otherwise not in the immediate room. Remember that all areas of the game are
considered public, including hidden rooms, locked guildhalls, and player
housing. When in doubt, steer the direction of the RP elsewhere.

* Do not take other players' items without their OOC consent. If you
accidentally end up with an item belonging to another player, ensure OOCly
that they do not want it back. Otherwise, find a way for the item to make it
  back to them.
