"When mages first touched the essence of the void, the language of silence
was terrifying... but not nearly as terrifying as the realization that it
was a language at all."
- Dejunn, Voidweaver Council Representative
The Voidweaver Society represents a group of former mages who study ways to
draw power from and manipulate the Void. This kind of magic is viewed with
suspicion from others, with its detractors seeing it as little more than
barely-controlled destruction. Some of its members joined after being
expelled from other magic societies when their predilection to dabble in
this kind of power became known.
Voidmagic is unpredictable and deadly, even for the most experienced of its
practitioners. Harnessing the power of the Void is a difficult craft, and
comes at great personal cost. There are stories of the earliest
practitioners being lost to madness, physically corrupted with horrible
deformities, or consumed by the Void outright and never seen again.
Almost no historical records exist of this kind of magic, or those who used
it, before the Blight. Society members pass on oral histories of a handful
of great Voidweavers from ancient history, but whether these stories are
real or myth cannot be verified.
In Altheria, it took Kellen, First Historian, arguing the need to research
the Void before the Society could get a foothold, given the mistrust
surrounding such powers. They originally called themselves Voidmages, but
this provoked an outcry from the Guild of Thaumaturgy who disliked the use
of the term mage, believing Voidmagic to not be a true High Magic art. The
guild instead adopted the term Voidweaver as a not-so-subtle jab, which has
since become their official name.
Society members generally believe that the Blight and the Void are
interlinked, and that understanding the Void is key to understanding and
perhaps undoing the catastrophe that has befallen the world. The Society
seeks to save Altheria from the Blight in its own way, and see the Void
itself as perhaps the best weapon to do so. However, given the great risk
such power poses to Altheria, and to the Barrier, those who go too far or
who are deemed too irresponsible are dealt with harshly by the Nightblades
and Vanguard; more than a few voidweavers have found themselves expelled
from the city itself, into the Blight. Despite this, explorers and
Historians occasionally seek Voidweavers for dangerous expeditions into the
Blightlands, as they have ways to protect themselves from its corruption.
