The Borderlands were the area between the holdings of the New Kingdoms that
collectively controlled much of the continent of Aelus. Being far from the
cities and seats of power of these places, residents likely had limited
concern for and awareness of the politics of whomever happened to be laying
claim over their particular community and its land at any given time.

War was a common aspect of life for them, with nations constantly squabbling
over borders, trading rights, and religious matters. Communities on the
margins may have changed owners multiple times, leaving communities torn
between different far-away places and lacking strong attachment to any of
them.

Borderlands culture cared most about putting in a good day's work with one's
hands and keeping out of other peoples' business. Pastoral festivals were
common in times of plenty, as a way to bring the community together and
ensure their own mouths were fed before some far-away nation came to claim
their tribute.

When the Blight came, these border settlements were largely without
protection, the people there having little choice but to immediately flee
for their lives.
